For the Department of Biology and Ecology of Fishes of IGB in Berlin-Friedrichshagen we are inviting applications for the position of a Scientist of Fisheries Assessment and Modelling with a starting date as soon as possible, ideally by January, 1, 2021.

The position is in the group of Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus ( as part of the inter- and transdisciplinary Boddenhecht (Boddenpike) project ( Boddenhecht studies the ecology and exploitation of Baltic Sea pike (Esox lucius) around Rügen. The scientist will be integrated in a multidisciplinary team composed of fisheries biologists, economists and geographers who jointly help develop management recommendations for Rügen pike in cooperation with stakeholders, based on sound social-ecological science contributed by the team. The scientist shall engage in stock assessments of the coastal pike stock and design and analyse spatially-explicit simulation models of the pike fishery. The age- and size-structured models shall represent the movement of pike and the adaptive behaviour of fishers and anglers and be used to examine outcomes of spatial and non-spatial management interventions in a management strategy evaluation framework in close feedback to stakeholders. The candidate shall coordinate moderated stakeholder workshops. In these workshops, using principles of structured decision-making, management recommendations for the pike stock of Rügen shall be developed. Depending on interest, also empirical questions using tagging or telemetry to understand the exploitation of the pike stock can be pursued.

Key responsibilities and duties

  • Stock assessments of the Rügen pike stock using data-poor assessment methods
  • Developing and analysing spatially-explicit numerical models that represent the interactions of the size-structured pike ecology, commercial and recreational fisheries, coastal hydrodynamics and management interventions
  • Leading a participatory stakeholder process
  • Co-leading the project and team management processes
  • Co-supervising students and supervising interns
  • Presenting and publishing the results in the primary literature and at academic and non-academic stakeholder meetings


  • PhD. in fisheries science, fish/wildlife biology, stock assessment, marine ecology, mathematical biology or a related degree
  • Essential: Quantitative modelling and fish stock assessment skills
  • Essential: Advanced statistical and programming skills
  • Essential: Knowledge of population ecology
  • Essential: Willingness for transdisciplinary model development together with economists and stakeholders
  • Essential: Communication skills and interest in leading stakeholder involvement and achieve applied outcomes
  • Essential: English language
  • Highly desirable: German language (stakeholder workshops will be in German) and car driving license
  • Desirable: GIS and related skills of spatial data visualization and data base management

Our offer

We offer an interesting position in an international and dynamic scientific environment whose aspiration is to develop research results that have practical implications for sustainable fisheries.

Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund). It is a full-time position with 39 hrs/week and is limited to 2.5 years. We actively support the reconciliation of work and family life. Thus, the position is suitable for job sharing or part-time work with at least 30 hrs/week.
