The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) is the largest freshwater ecology research institute in Germany. It is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. and the Leibniz-Association (www.wgl.de). The FVB manages 8 large research institutes in Berlin that have close links to all three universities in the German capital. IGB offers excellent laboratory and field facilities for interdisciplinary research, large-scale experimental facilities, and long-term research programs and data sets.
IGB in the research group by Dr. Markus Venohr invites applications for a
PhD student (m/f/d)
in analysing spatio-temporal distributions of recreation activities, as part of a collaborative project AQUATAG addressing "Recreation activities in inland waters: Dynamics, ecological impacts, social significance and sustainable management" applied for at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). AQUATAG constitutes a social-ecological project that studies the interactions between diverse recreational uses of freshwaters from ecological, economic and social perspectives. The broad research approach involves data analysis of social media, on-site and off-site surveys, ecological field surveys, spatial modelling and the development of integrated management concepts (for project concept, see Venohr et al. (2018), doi: 10.1139/er-2017-0024).
The objective of the PhD project is to analyse spatial patterns and temporal dynamics of recreational activities using various social and ecological data sources, such as social media data, surveys and weather conditions. In this context site characteristics (e.g. naturalness, water quality parameters, accessibility) will be linked with the preferences of users to identify usage-type (e.g. angling, canoeing, swimming) specific spatial distributions and frequencies across Germany.
We are seeking to recruit a dedicated PhD student with background in landscape ecology, geography, ecosystem services, social-ecological systems or related research fields. The successful candidate should be interested in combining interdisciplinary scientific approaches and related datasets and should have first experiences and keen interest in spatial analysis (GIS) and statistics (R). Expertise in programming and working with large data sets would be advantageous.
The position is available as soon as possible and is limited to 3 years. Salary is paid according to the TVöD (66 % position). In keeping with the IGB's policy regarding gender equality, female applicants are particularly encouraged. Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude are given preferential consideration.
How to apply?
We seek an exclusively electronic application consisting of a single combined PDF file that includes: cover letter (max. 1 page), letter of motivation (max. 2 pages), curriculum vitae, max. 2 representative publications (or master/bachelor thesis as copy), copies of relevant certificates as well as names and contact addresses of up to three reviewers. Please upload your application via the IGB’s online job-application facility (www.igb-berlin.de/job-offers.html). The application deadline is 10.05.2019.
Enquiries or questions should be directed to Dr. Markus Venohr (+49-30-6392-4074, firstname.lastname@example.org).
We are looking forward to your application!
