For the Department of Fish Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Research Group Integrative Fisheries Management of Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin-Friedrichshagen (www.igb-berlin.de) at the beautiful Lake Müggelsee we are inviting applications for the position of postdoc/scientist in fisheries economics with a starting date of January, 1, 2024. The position is limited to a maximum of two years.

Within the project marEEchange funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research, we are searching for a postdoc in fisheries economics to study the reorganization of the commercial fishery for the western Baltic Cod. At IGB, you will become a member of an interdisciplinary team of fisheries researchers led by Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus (www.ifishman.de) who studies fisheries as social-ecological systems. Other collaborators are from iDiv (Prof. Martin Quaas), University of Hamburg (Prof. Dr. Christian Möllmann) and Thünen Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries (Dr. Harry Strehlow). This project is a follow-up project of the marEEshift project. The aim of the postdoc position is to study how the commercial fishery for western Baltic cod has responded to the stock crossing a tipping point and associating severe quota cuts, for example by identifying factors contributing to entry-exit behaviour, species spill-over and fleet resiliency.

Key responsibilities and duties

  • Compiling and econometrically analysing vessel-level time series of the coastal commercial fishery in Germany
  • Publishing the results in the primary literature
  • Presenting the results at project meetings and conferences
  • Contributing to project reporting
  • Co-supervising students

Your profile

Mandatory

  • PhD in agricultural economics, environmental economics, fisheries economics or a related field
  • Track record of primary publications
  • Well-developed econometric and statistical skillset
  • Ability to lead and finish projects
  • Team work skills and self-motivation
  • English language skills

Desirable

  • German language skills

Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund) within the E13 page range. It includes health insurance and social benefits. It is a full-time position with 39 working hours per week, but part-time work can be accommodated. Funding for this position is for a maximum of two years, with no ability for extension, but the candidate can write own follow-up proposals.
