The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB, is the largest German institute dealing with freshwater ecology and inland fisheries. It is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB, and the Leibniz-Association ( The FVB manages 8 large research institutes in Berlin that have close links to all three universities in the German capital. IGB offers excellent laboratory and field facilities for interdisciplinary research, large-scale experimental facilities, and long-term research programs and data sets.

Pending final approval of a third-party funded research and development (R+D) project, IGB invites applications for a position as


Doctoral student (m/f) in recreational disturbance ecology and management

with a focus on recreational fisheries and aquatic biodiversity.


The position is available from April, 1, 2018 in the research group of Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus ( and limited to 3 years.


Duties and responsibilities


  • Statistical meta-analysis of ecological effects of water-based recreation on aquatic biodiversity
  • Assessment of recreational use and multivariate analysis of environmental and recreational variables on aquatic biodiversity in angler-managed gravel pits
  • Document analysis of public approval and planning processes in relation to the recreational use and management of gravel pits in a multi-use and multi-objective context


  • Derivation of scientifically supported management recommendations for managing the interface of fisheries management, recreation and nature conservation in close collaboration with other scientists in sister projects, particularly of the Baggersee project (, and representatives from collaborating angler associations.
  • Presenting of scientific data nationally and internationally as well as crafting of peer-reviewed and popular scientific articles




  • M.Sc. or Diploma in fisheries science, limnology, nature conservation, environmental science, sustainability science, political ecology or a related degree
  • Taxonomic and ecological knowledge of at least two water-based taxa of conservation value (either fish, macrophytes, dragonflies, amphibians, waterfowl or other terrestrial birds/plants commonly found close to shorelines)
  • Biostatistical skills well beyond a standard t-test
  • High motivation of conducting interdisciplinary work and achieved applied outcomes
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently


  • High communicative abilities (verbal, written)
  • Driving license and ability for prolonged field work in Lower Saxony
  • Proven ability to produce scientific publications and German language skills are major benefits.


The successful candidate will be included in an interdisciplinary, social-ecological working group at the interface of applied and fundamental fish, fisheries and conservation science, and will close work with members of the group (see for details). The work shall result in a dissertation at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin under supervison of Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus. Salary is paid according to the TVöD (66%).
