The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) is the largest freshwater ecology research institute in Germany. It is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. and the Leibniz-Association (www.wgl.de). Postdoctoral research fellow in Ecohydrological Modelling
The post forms part of the project VeWa: Vegetation effects on water flow and mixing in high-latitude ecosystems", funded by the European Research Council. VeWa is an interdisciplinary project which investigates water and plant interlinkages and consequent water availability in ecosystems to understand future responses to change. The post is designed conduct coupled hydrological/ecohydrological modelling. Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in hydrology, ecology, soil science, or a related field of environmental science. The successful candidate will be dynamic and motivated and have experience in the development and application of numerical models for various scales and environmental science contexts. The successful candidate should be experienced in combining process-based understanding with strong numerical/computational skills. Experience with programming is essential. Expertise in remote sensing & data assimilation and/or incorporation of tracers into hydrological models would be advantageous. Other advantageous background includes experience in working in interdisciplinary research projects, and working well in a team environment. Strong English language skills both in oral and written communication are also required.
The post is based at the the Leibniz Institute in Berlin (Germany) but involves close collaboration with international project partners (in Scotland, Canada, Sweden, US).
The position is available from 1st October 2017 and limited to 1 year.
Duties and responsibilities

- A PhD in hydrology, soil science, ecology or a relevant area of environmental science is required or in the process of submitting or correcting a PhD thesis

- Experience in environmental hydrology, ecohydrology and / or tracer hydrology.
- A strong record of publication, commensurate with career stage, in internationally leading journals
- Expertise in modelling research studies (essential)
- Experience with programming in MATLAB, R or another software development tool (essential)
- Experience in working in collaborative research activities, and working well in a team environment (desirable)
- Demonstrable national/international recognition appropriate to career stage
- Experience with incorporation of tracers into hydrological models (desirable)
- An interest in hydrological implications of environmental and climate change (desirable)
